Fleet Captain Needed: SVYC is in need of a Fleet Captain to plan trips and manage our kayak program. Our dear Peggy has moved on after serving for several years. Thank you to Annette Jenkins for managing the rack assignments. If you can help with this important volunteer job, please contact Commodore Karen at svyc-admin@svyclub.com Karen will serve as the interim Fleet Captain.
Currently, trips are being led by Paddle Captains: Roonie Rost (rockyroost@comcast.net) and Karen Schaffer. Rosanna Gibbons is leading monthly Sunset / Full Moon Paddles (nutritionbestrx@verizon.net) Several other Paddle Crew members have volunteered to lead trips. If you're interested in being a Paddle Captain on one or more local or travel adventures, please contact Karen!
Paddling Adventures
Members are always welcome to use the launch for their own adventures. Group paddles are held on Wednesdays. During “season,” and weather permitting, members of the Paddle Crew meet around 9:00 am on Wednesdays to launch from the club or travel to launches within 30 minutes of the club. There are monthly sunset / full moon paddles too! Our crew members are a welcoming group of people who share a love of our beautiful Florida waterways.
Local destinations are shown on the map above. Travel trips are planned one or more times per month. Several kayak trailers are available on a first come first serve basis, and some paddlers transport their own craft. Routes include streams, rivers and open waters. Each year the Kayak Paddle Crew plans an all day event with picnic lunches.
Sunset / full moon paddles are held monthly in the evening. This is a leisurely paddle to the beach to hang out, swim, maybe do a few yoga poses, then paddle back under the full moon. Very delightful!
Please email Karen Schaffer to be added to the Paddle Crew list (svyc-admin@svyclub.com). As a member of the paddle crew, you will get an email from the Paddle Captain several days in advance of the trip. Information regarding the time, launch, and route will be provided. For travel trips, if you would like a space on the trailer to transport your boat, contact the Paddle Captain promptly - these are first come, first served!
Important: The South Venice Yacht Club is not a kayak/SUP storage facility. We are a social club that allows members in good standing to use available kayak racks for a yearly donation. Active Members may store kayaks and canoes on racks assigned on a first-come first-served basis. Note that a spouse or partner who is not a member may not store a boat or make a practice of participating in events or using club property.
Kayak rack fees are posted on the Membership page HERE. As a volunteer, not-for-profit organization, members are expected to help maintain the clubhouse, boatyard, storage racks, dock, and launch.
Important Boating Protocol Information:
Before paying rack storage donation as a new member, contact the Kayak Rack Coordinator regarding availability of rack storage and suitability of your vessel. (annette@annettejenkins.com)
Store your vessel in the assigned location only
Security is the responsibility of the boat owner; the club is not responsible for damaged or stolen craft
All watercraft should be locked securely to the assigned rack
Always lock the gate before you go out for a paddle
Do not share the gate or door code with non-members
Members must accompany guests and are responsible for their safety.
Guests are welcome to accompany a member on group paddles, they will be asked to sign a waiver and will be asked to join after three trips
If you paddle alone, please tell a friend or family member
Required safety gear includes life jacket, whistle and a tow rope at least the length of your boat
Boat & Trailer Storage Policy - Effective November 4, 2024
Storage at SVYC is intended for small mainly human powered vessels with shallow draft, such as canoes, kayaks and paddleboards. Storage is open to current club members only.
SVYC officers (Commodore, Rear Commodore, Kayak Coordinator) will determine appropriateness of each vessel for storage at SVYC. They will assign the vessel storage location and suitability for our launch and shallow inlet.
Existing trailers are "grandfathered". No additional trailer storage is available at this time.
Fees & Housekeeping Rules:
Required license plate registration must be current and displayed on trailers.
Boats and trailers in storage are subject to occasional checks for proper maintenance and neatness of tarps, covers, etc.
Vessels left unattended/abandoned are subject to removal from club premises following verbal and written notice from SVYC board officer.
Boat and trailer owners are advised that SVYC is not responsible for boat, trailer, or any associated equipment on the boat or trailer, and will sign a release of liability.
All Kayak Members: Vessels and trailers must be removed from the SVYC property in response to predicted storms or flooding as directed by the Commodore or a Board Member. You are required to remove your vessels, or make arrangements to have them removed by a local person during hurricane season (June 1 to November 30).
Kayak Members who are Snowbirds: You are required to remove your vessels before departing the area, or make arrangements to have them removed, if required by the Commodore or a Board Member due to predicted storms or flooding.
Your plan is documented in the mandatory kayak and trailer evacuation plan. It is your responsibility to keep this plan current.
