2025 Conservation Easement
SVYC has been offered a chance to obtain a Conservation Easement to protect the land from development. Officers and members are in the beginning phase of educating themselves and obtaining initial estimates. The process to evaluate the Conservation Easement and decide if it is in the best interest of the club is collaborative, with all Club members having input into each step of the process. We have taken the first step on a 100 mile journey.
2024 Hurricanes Helene and Milton
SVYC's clubhouse and grounds were significantly impacted by Hurricanes Helene and Milton.
Hurricane Helene's storm surge brought about 40 inches of water onto the grounds causing many kayak racks to collapse and 1 foot of water inside the building. SVYC members came to the rescue, cleaning up the building & grounds. ServPro was hired to dry & decontaminate the building.
Two weeks later, Hurricane Milton arrived with 36 inches of water into the building and an estimated 5 feet onto the grounds. Preparations & Helene cleanup efforts reduced the amount of additional damage from this storm. However we have much work and expenditures ahead to get the clubhouse and grounds ready to restart dinner dances and other activities.
Over 70 members donated their time and energy to rebuild the club after these storms. Work was completed in about 7 weeks and included replacing flooded kitchen cabinets with stainless steel rolling carts, installing, mudding and painting drywall, rebuilding 21 kayak racks, refurbishing the bathroom stalls and scrubbing and disinfecting EVERYTHING!
Volunteering to help with the recovery effort gives us a chance to spend time with our SVYC friends and is a major contribution to recovery by reducing our dependence on hired contractors.
